This is a wall box, a kind of letterbox embedded on the wall of my neighbour. I was wondering for a while what it is as it looked different from a normal post box in red with a pillar shape. Besides, it says GviR, instead of EiiR (Elizabeth ll Regina).
Now I've learned that it represents George Rex (meaning King in Latin). This was a formal signature used by George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth ll.
As Prince Phillip passed away on April 9th, 2021 the royals are now mourning his death. I watched some TV programs and was impressed with his turbulent life from WWII to Covid-19.
In fact, it was George VI who invited young Phillip to introduce Royal Naval College to him and the future queen.🌹 I made a momentary trip to some stories related to their romance, thanks to this dignified black letterbox...
Here's another letterbox I found in the neighbourhood. I wrote on Instagram a little about the history of Royal Mail and letterboxes in relation to Henry VIII and Jane Austen. As you may know, Royal Mail was established in 1516 during the reign of Henry VIII. Austen praised their services in 'Emma' in a scene where Mr John Knightley speaks to Jane Fairfax about her walking to the post office in the rain.
Looking at some old fashioned letter boxes built in the brick walls, I was wondering the scene would've been different if there were pillar boxes, which were introduced in 1852...
